Carbon Capture and Storage

The EU has repeatedly confirmed its position that the global, annual mean surface temperature should not increase by more than 2°C above pre-industrial levels. To develop consistent emissions reduction trajectories up to 2050, the European Commission has worked out roadmaps. Many member states as well as industry sectors have done the same. One of the recurrent key messages of all roadmaps is the strong contribution of the EU’s power sector, which according to the EU low-carbon roadmap would need to be close to or entirely carbon-free by 2050 to achieve the EU’s agreed objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions domestically by 80% until 2050 compared to 1990. Such a major technological transformation can only succeed with continuous investments in low-carbon technologies but also require a phase-out of existing, carbon-intensive technologies.

The project will build upon CEPS Energy Climate House research on electricity market design and evaluate the various options for a long-term price signal for low-carbon technologies, including CCS.

The project is supported by the Global CCS Institute.
